The Third Coast CFAR congratulates Brian Feinstein, PhD, for his appointment as Research Assistant Professor at Institute for Sexual and Gender Minority Health and Wellbeing (ISGMH). Dr. Feinstein started at ISGMH in 2015 as a postdoctoral research fellow. Dr. Feinstein’s program of research broadly focuses on understanding and reducing the health disparities affecting sexual and gender minority (SGM) populations, especially bisexual and other non-monosexual individuals.
Dr. Feinstein received his doctorate in clinical psychology from Stony Brook University in 2015 after completing an APA-accredited internship at the University of Washington School of Medicine. Prior to joining the faculty at Northwestern University, he received funding from the National Institute on Drug Abuse to complete a postdoctoral research fellowship in the Department of Medical Social Sciences at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. Dr. Feinstein is particularly interested in understanding how different types of stress influence mental health, substance use, sexual risk behavior, and relationship functioning among SGM individuals and couples. He is also interested in developing and testing interventions to improve health and relationships in these populations. Dr. Feinstein is also a licensed clinical psychologist in the state of Illinois.
Dr. Feinstein has also received a Career Development Award (K08) from the National Institute on Drug Abuse. The award will support a five-year project focused on examining factors that drive engagement in HIV risk behavior and substance use among self-identified bisexual male youth (ages 14-17) and developing and pilot testing an HIV and substance use prevention intervention for self-identified bisexual male youth. This award will provide him with training to develop expertise in adolescent health, qualitative research methods, and intervention development.
